The Chickasaw Nation
had a village under Chief Tuscumba near the big spring of cold water
when the white man arrived here. The village was known by the Indian
name for the big spring, Okacopasaw, meaning Cold Water. The city of
Tuscumbia was first incorporated as Ococoposa in 1820 or translated into
English meaning the city Cold Water. The name was changed to Tuscumbia
in 1823.
